Canadian novelist David Morrell created the Green Beret character "John Rambo". The book was later made into a film for on screen. Stallone starred in First Blood (1982) with Richard Crenna & Brian Dennehy. It was a spectacular film that caused controversy among audiences due of its commentary on the Vietnam conflict, which was still fresh within the American people's minds. It was a film that, despite its political beliefs it was a huge success internationally. The sequel called Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), came out. The film was met with much more criticism due to the storyline that claimed American MIAs were being detained in Vietnam. They insist, however, that no bad publicity have a place. John Rambo's second adventure turned out to be a major success for Stallone. It affirmed his position as one of the most famous males of America in the 1980s. Stallone rode a surge of popularity and made Rocky Balboa his old sparring opponent. He returned to the ring to defend American pride against the Soviet threat, a Russian born boxer named Ivan Drago (played by curt Dolph Ludgren in Rocky IV (1985). The fifth installment of the series was quite controversial for "Rocky" fans, as violence levels seemed excessive compared with previous "Rocky" films, especially in the brutal assault suffered by Apollo Creed, played by Carl Weathers, at the hands of the unstoppable "Siberian Express".
